If your child cannot tolerate dental treatment in the traditional dental clinic setting, he or she may be a candidate for dental treatment in the hospital setting. In coordination with medical and nursing staff, our doctors have privileges at local hospitals to perform dental treatment while children are asleep.
Is hospital dentistry right for my child?
Hospital dentistry services may be indicated for:
- children who have difficulty holding still for treatment
- patients with physical, emotional, or developmental disabilites
- patients with complex medical conditions
- children and patients with circumstances that prevent them from being able to receive treatment in the dental clinic
For these situations, the use of general anesthesia may be the best option for your family.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia will put your child into a deep sleep. An Anesthesiologist or Nurse Anesthetist will administer the medicine, monitor your child throughout the procedure, and handle any complcations that might occur. Upon completion of the dental procedure, your child will be taken to the recovery area and monitored by the nursing staff. These procedures are typically scheduled in the morning and your child will be able to go home the same day.
Our doctors and dental team will assist you in the steps to schedule hospital dentistry. It will be important to follow the steps provided to you by both our office and the hospital. Children are often able to resume normal activity within a day or two of their dental treatment.
